Las 100 mejores canciones de rock fue un programa especial de televisión del canal musical de cable VH1, el cual presentaba un listado de temas de música rock que este realizó entre 700 personas vinculadas a la industria de la música en Estados Unidos. Entre los músicos que votaron figuraron Bono del grupo U2, Johnny Cash, Art Garfunkel, Bonnie Raitt y Lou Reed.

La canción de The Rolling Stones, «(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction» fue seleccionada como el mejor tema jamás interpretado en la historia del rock, según un sondeo realizado en Nueva York.

The Beatles estuvieron representados en la lista con el mayor número de temas de un mismo intérprete o grupo de intérpretes: nueve canciones. La primera de ellas, «Hey Jude», quedó en noveno puesto.

En la lista aparecen cinco cortes de The Rolling Stones y cuatro de Elvis Presley y Led Zeppelin respectivamente. Bob Dylan estuvo representado con tres, además de su composición «All Along the Watchtower», que los encuestados prefirieron en la versión de Jimi Hendrix.

El tema más antiguo de la lista es «Rock Around the Clock» de Bill Haley & His Comets, publicado en 1954, y el más reciente fue «Smells Like Teen Spirit», de la banda Nirvana, publicado en 1991.

Controversia

Una importante cantidad de público quedó descontento por las fuertes ausencias de canciones como «I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For» de U2, «Losing My Religion» de R.E.M., «Sultans of Swing» de Dire Straits, «Help!» de The Beatles, «Tutti Frutti» de Little Richard, la legendaria «Smoke on the Water» de Deep Purple o los éxitos de Black Sabbath «Paranoid» y «Iron Man». También el público definió como "vergonzoso" editar una lista que no incluya nada de Pink Floyd, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Stooges, Pearl Jam, The Byrds y Guns N' Roses, ya que son considerados como algunas de las mejores bandas de rock de la historia.
