Limita al norte con Escocia y al oeste con Gales. Es frecuente el uso erróneo de Inglaterra como sinónimo de Gran Bretaña o del Reino Unido (opción que puede resultar ofensiva para escoceses, galeses, y norirlandeses).
La bandera inglesa es la Cruz de San Jorge. Es una cruz roja sobre fondo blanco, que también forma parte de las banderas de las provincias de Aragón, la bandera de Barcelona, el escudo de la ciudad de Milán, así como la bandera de Georgia.
Origen del nombre
Al terminar el mandato romano sobre Britania (la parte sur de Gran Bretaña), la isla fue invadida tanto por pueblos celtas procedentes de Escocia e Irlanda como por tribus gérmanicas venidas de los actuales Países Bajos, Alemania, y Dinamarca, principalmente anglos, sajones y jutos. Estas tribus acabaron fusionándose entre sí y, en cierta forma, con la población local, principalmente los Britones, fundando una serie de reinos en el sureste de Britania. A esta zona le dieron los francos el nombre latino Anglae terra (‘Tierra de los anglos’), que más tarde pasó a utilizarse en la mayor parte de Europa. Posteriormente los propios ingleses tradujeron este nombre como England.
Es curioso que el nombre de este territorio varía dependiendo de dónde provenga la denominación: para los europeos continentales, el nombre de «Tierra de los anglos» fue el que perduró, aun cuando los anglos estaban más al norte que los reinos sajones en la isla. Sin duda alguna, influyó el hecho de que los reinos anglos de Northumbria, Mercia y Anglia Oriental abarcaban el 80% del territorio de la Heptarquía y a ellos correspondió la supremacía política durante los siglos VI y VII, especialmente durante los reinados de Edwin de Northumberland y de Penda y Offa de Mercia. A esta supremacía política de los anglos se unió una primacía cultural, pues los monasterios de Northumbria, especialmente el de Lindisfarne, se convirtieron en centros culturales de primer orden, de donde surgieron grandes figuras como Alcuino de York y Beda el Venerable, que tuvieron una gran influencia en el desarrollo de la cultura de la Europa merovingia y carolingia. Además, concurría un hecho que jugaba en contra de una hipotética Saxonland: y es que en el continente, en la frontera oriental del reino de los francos, se asentaba el pueblo de los sajones continentales, que tras ser sometido por Carlomagno, se integró en el Imperio Carolingio y posteriormente en el Sacro Imperio. El uso de los términos Anglia y angli esquivaba molestas homonimias y evitaba la posibilidad de confundir a los anglosajones con los sajones del Continente.
En el marco de los propios anglosajones, la Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum de Beda el Venerable marca una tendencia. En esta obra, las palabras angli, angelfolc y gentis anglorum se utilizan en un doble sentido: en un sentido amplio, designan a todos aquellos pueblos de lengua germánica que invadieron Gran Bretaña a finales del siglo V y principios del VI, ya fueran anglos jutos y sajones.[3] En un sentido estricto, tales términos se referían exclusivamente a la tribu de los anglos, excluyendo a los jutos y los sajones. Esta terminología fue aceptada incluso por los sajones de Wessex, que a partir de Alfredo el Grande, se titulaban a sí mismos como Rex Saxonum et Anglorum (reyes de los anglos). Sin duda alguna, influyó el hecho de que a partir del tratado de Wedmore (878) y la conquista de Londres, amplias zonas habitadas por anglos cayeran en poder del rey Alfredo. Precisamente fue este monarca, el que, a pesar de ser sajón, hizo todo lo posible por patrocinar una identidad paninglesa entre los pueblos de habla anglosajona de Britannia.
En sus traducciones de las obras de Beda el Venerable se usa el vocablo englisc (inglés), y no saxisc (sajón), para referirse a la lengua anglosajona. Además, la expresión gentis Anglorum es traducida por Alfredo como con el vocablo Angelcynn (el pueblo de los ingleses). No en vano, los reyes de Wessex eran descendientes del legendario rey de los anglos Offa (no confundir con Offa de Mercia), que reinó en el Norte de Alemania siglos antes de la gran migración a Britannia. Los reyes de los anglosajones, dueños ya a partir de Athelstan de toda Inglaterra, adoptaron diferentes títulos como Rex Angulsæxna (rey de los anglosajones) o Rex Anglorum (rey de los ingleses) y finalmente en el siglo XI la última expresión se consolidó, y el vocablo «ingleses» desplazó definitivamente al de «sajones».
En las lenguas celtas, el nombre de los sajones fue el que tuvo mayor arraigo, como por ejemplo: Sasana en gaélico irlandés; Sasainn en gaélico escocés; Lloegr para el territorio, pero saeson como gentilicio, en galés y bro-saoz en bretón.

Prehistoria
Los primeros habitantes
El continente europeo tiene al noroeste un conjunto de islas conocidas antiguamente como las Bretañas (Britanias), siendo la Gran Bretaña la más importante por su tamaño (de ahí ha tomado el nombre de Gran Bretaña). La isla era relativamente insignificante en la historia de la civilización occidental. Se conservan pocos indicios del idioma o civilización de los primeros habitantes, tan sólo monumentos megalíticos, tales como el Stonehenge, que datan de la Edad del Bronce (hacia el 2300-800 a. C.).
Sus primeros habitantes llegaron a pie hace 210.000 años, en un periodo de glaciación, gracias a que Gran Bretaña estaba unida al continente, ya que el nivel del mar estaba cien metros por debajo del actual. Los primeros asentamientos de estos habitantes se realizaron en torno a lo que hoy es el Gales meridional y la zona occidental de Inglaterra. El Homo sápiens apareció hace 30.000 años, con presencia numerosa a finales de la última glaciación, hace 13.000 años.
En el 7500 a. C. está datado el centro mesolítico maglemosiense de Star Carr (Yorkshire). La cultura tardenosiense llegó más tarde, en dos oleadas. Maglemosienses y tardenosienses eran cazadores y recolectores y los primeros conocían el hacha y los sistemas de tala.
Llegó a continuación la cultura aziliense, con asentamientos en las costas. Se conservan muy pocos restos, debido, quizá, a que en el 5000 a. C., el deshielo separa Gran Bretaña del continente.
La llegada de las culturas agricultoras
En el 3800 a. C. llegaron por mar los primeros colonizadores agricultores. Se asentaron en Wessex y durante decenas de años convivieron con los maglemosienses de las selvas, los tardenosienses de los valles fluviales y los azilienses de los litorales. El éxito acompañó a esta cultura de agricultores y pastores, llamada de Windmill Hill por el lugar donde apareció un rico yacimiento, que en 3000 a. C. estaba extendida por Gran Bretaña e Irlanda. La necesidad de sílex forzó la primera explotación minera. Se han encontrado sepulturas en forma de largos túmulos de tierra y yeso. Los más largos se denominan bank barrows y el resto long barrows.
En 2800 a. C. está datado el monumento megalítico West Kennet Long Barrow, consecuencia de la llegada de un primer contingente de constructores, que se mezcló con la cultura de Windmill Hill. Un segundo contingente desembarcó más tarde en el sudoeste de Escocia y norte de Irlanda, con asentamientos en Man, Gales y Derbyshire. A Irlanda llegaron después los constructores conocidos como cultura de Boyne. Con el paso del tiempo, los contactos entre cazadores y agricultores dieron origen al comercio. La cultura de los pueblos del neolítico secundario (llamada de Peterborough por un yacimiento allí encontrado, incluye la caza y la pesca junto con la agricultura y la cerámica. Otros grupos culturales son los de Rinyo-Clacton, establecidos en el norte de Escocia y sudeste de Inglaterra y el de Dorchester en el valle del Támesis. Aparecen también factorías de hachas. Datados en el 2600 a. C., se localizan en el sur de Inglaterra numerosos terraplenes circulares, con un acceso, denominados henges. En 2300 a. C. se efectúa la primera construcción de Stonehenge.
La edad del Bronce
En 1900 a. C. llegan varios grupos del vaso campaniforme, del comercio del cobre, la cerveza, el oro y la plata. Bajo su empuje, la agricultura se convirtió en una actividad secundaria, desplazada por la ganadería, la caza y la primera artesanía de los metales. Windmill Hill desapareció como cultura, pero los pueblos del neolítico secundario continuaron la suya. La cultura del vaso campaniforme no construye monumentos megalíticos para la realización de enterramientos. West Kennet Long Barrow deja de utilizarse como sepultura en 1700 a. C.
Los hombres de la cultura del vaso campaniforme construyeron el santuario de Avebury y la montaña artificial de Silbury Hill, el grupo de monolitos de Callanish y la segunda estructura de Stonehenge. En 1700 a. C. desembarcan en Inglaterra tribus de armoricanos en busca de minas de cobre y estaño. Estos pueblos del bronce impusieron su cultura sobre los pueblos indígenas del cobre y descubrieron los mayores yacimientos de estaño de Europa. Los asentamientos en Cornualles de la que se llama cultura de Wessex pronto despegaron económicamente gracias al comercio. Mediante conquista, lograron unificar todo el centro y sur de Inglaterra. Los celtas eran un grupo de pueblos que dominaba la mayor parte del oeste y centro de Europa durante el I milenio a. C. y que transmitió su idioma, costumbre y religión a los otros pueblos de la zona.

Los anglosajones fueron varios pueblos germanos que a partir del siglo V invadieron y conquistaron Inglaterra en el sur de Britania.
Estado, religión y economía durante la Edad Media
La monarquía inglesa en la Edad Media se caracteriza por su gran patrimonio, capacidad de influencia, poder y control sobre la nobleza. La burocracia era incipiente. La organización territorial se basaba en los condados y era sólida y eficaz. no existían ejército o policía regulares. El Parlamento era débil, con preponderancia de la Cámara de los Comunes sobre la Cámara de los Lores.
La Iglesia se identificaba con el poder real, era rica, mantenedora de la cultura y benefactora social. Estructurada en parroquias. El clero era poco instruido y de moral relajada. El Císter llegó a Inglaterra en 1128, los dominicos en 1221, los franciscanos en 1224 y los carmelitas en 1240.
El único movimiento herético aparecido en Inglaterra en este periodo fue el de los lolardos. John Wyclif atacó algunas de las doctrinas fundamentales de la Iglesia y la autoridad papal, basándose en la suprema autoridad de las Escrituras. Sus discípulos tradujeron al inglés sus ideas y la Biblia. Fueron perseguidos desde 1401. En 1414, dirigidos por John Oldcastle, intentaron derrocar a Enrique V. Su derrota implicó su definitiva clandestinidad y progresiva extinción.
El sajón occidental fue la lengua de Inglaterra hasta la conquista normanda. Recibió influencias del latín, del normando y del francés. Esta lengua fue la dominante en la Corte, la administración, la justicia, etc. de Inglaterra hasta 1350, cuando empezó a ser sustituido por el inglés medio.
La esclavitud desapareció antes de 1300 y la servidumbre en 1485. En 1086 la población alcanzaba millón y medio de habitantes, en 1300 cuatro millones.
En 1315, 1316, 1320 y 1321 las cosechas fueron malas y en 1319 y 1321 se produjeron epidemias en el ganado ovino y vacuno. Se generalizó el hambre y el precio del grano se duplicó.
La peste negra llegó a Inglaterra en 1348 y dejó la población en la mitad. Se padecieron cinco nuevos brotes entre 1361 y 1397. Con el declive demográfico, subió el nivel de vida de los campesinos. El gobierno intentó controlar el mercado laboral en beneficio de los patronos y en 1351 aprobó el Estatuto de los Trabajadores, sobre precios y salarios.
Londres era el centro comercial del reino y terminal del comercio. En 1500 tenía entre 40.000 y 100.000 habitantes. Westminster era la sede de la Corte y el Parlamento. De las demás ciudades inglesas, solo Norwich superaba en 1500 los 10.000 habitantes. Los burgueses que regían las ciudades estaban organizados en gremios.
En la Edad Media, Inglaterra pasó de un modelo económico colonial, exportador de materias primas e importador de productos manufacturados y de lujo, a exportar paños, favorecido por la inmigración de tejedores flamencos.
Gobierno y política
Organización político-administrativa
Actualmente, Inglaterra se divide en cuatro niveles de subdivisiones administrativas: regiones, condados, distritos y parroquias.
Históricamente, la tapa de la jerarquía administrativa en Inglaterra era los condados. Estas divisiones habían emergido de un espectro grande de viejas unidades territoriales inglesas. Antes de la unificación, eran algunos reinos, como Essex y Sussex; Ducados, como Yorkshire, Cornualles y Lancashire o, simplemente, áreas de tierra donadas a algún noble, como es el caso de Berkshire. Desde el final del siglo XIX, ocurrió una serie de reorganizaciones del gobierno local. La solución a la aparición de grandes áreas urbanas era la creación de grandes condados metropolitanos, centrados en las ciudades (por ejemplo, Greater Manchester). En los años noventa, una reforma del gobierno local comenzó la creación de autoridades unitarias, donde distritos ganaron el estado administrativo de un condado. Hoy en día, existe confusión entre los condados ceremoniales (que no forman siempre una unidad administrativa) y los condados metropolitanos y no-metropolitanas.
Geografía
Inglaterra comprende la mayoría de la mitad sur de la isla de Gran Bretaña, y limita al norte con Escocia y al oeste con Gales. De acuerdo al censo de 2001 la población de Inglaterra era de 49.138.831 habitantes.
Economía
El suelo se utiliza para algún tipo de agricultura porque es muy eficiente y productivo. Se cultiva trigo, cebada, centeno, remolacha azucarera, oleaginosas y patatas. Se explota la madera de árboles como el roble, haya, fresno, olmo, pino y abeto. La industria pesquera es muy importante para el sur de Inglaterra, Kingston-upon-Hull, Grimsby, Plymouth. La minería como el carbón y el hierro fueron elementos claves para industrialización. También hay minerales como la sal. Inglaterra posee grandes recursos energéticos y es excelente productor de petróleo y gas natural. Otras fuentes de energía son el carbón y la energía nuclear. Se desarrollan las industrias de alta tecnología (farmacéuticas, electrónicas, aerospaciales y de equipos para plataformas petroleras marinas). De fibra óptica de alta calidad para toda Europa. Su moneda es la libra esterlina.
Demografía
Inglaterra cuenta con una población levemente superior a los 50 millones, representando estos, una cifra cercana al 85% del total de habitantes del Reino Unido.
Inglaterra es además uno de los países de Europa más densamente poblados, alcanzando tasas de 380 habitantes por kilómetro cuadrado.
Religión
El 71.5% de la población inglesa y galesa se declaran cristiana (evangélica, metodista, inconformista, calvinista, catolica), el 14.81% no tienen una religión, el 2.97% musulmán, el 1.06% hindú, el 0.63% sij, el 0.5% judío, el 0.29% budista, y, el 0.29% de otras religiones.
