A continuación se muestra una lista de hablantes según Ethnologue para 1999, con más de 60 millones de hablantes, ordenados por hablantes como lengua materna. En la siguiente columna figura el número de hablantes como primera y segunda lengua. En la última, se ofrecen datos de Krystal del total de hablantes para el 2010, y otras fuentes de hablantes como lengua materna. Véase también la lista que Ethnologue elaboró para las ediciones de 1999 y 2009.[1] [2]

[editar] Macrolenguas
A continuación, se presentan las tres macrolenguas más importantes. Cada macrolengua es la suma de todas las variedades de una lengua, no necesariamente inteligibles entre sí; y, aunque lo fueran, no se consideran una lengua propia. Por ejemplo, el español, el francés, el italiano y el portugués son lenguas romances consideradas inteligibles entre sí. Véase Inteligibilidad mutua.
