Nacido en un condado interior de Hertfordshire, al sureste de Inglaterra, en el Reino Unido, se hizo famoso como jugador de fútbol profesional, jugando en la liga Inglesa de fútbol. Caracterizado como uno de los jugadores más rudos del fútbol, saltó a la fama cuando un fotógrafo lo tomó agarrando los testículos al jugador del Newcastle United Paul Gascoigne. Jugó en clubes como Wimbledon, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Chelsea y Queens Park Rangers. Internacionalmente jugó con la selección nacional de Gales.
Tras su retirada del fútbol, Vinnie Jones ha iniciado una carrera como actor. Actuó en la comedia inglesa del director Guy Ritchie Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), y repitió con el mismo director en el año 2000 en la comedia Snatch. En el año 2006 hizo el papel de Juggernaut en la película X-Men 3, dirigida por Brett Ratner.
Fue conocido también por la siguiente frase: "Ganar no es tan importante siempre y cuando ganes". (Winning doesn't really matter as long as you win.)
