El actor escocés Gerard Butler tras su debut en la pantalla grande Mrs. Brown de 1997, apareció en varias películas y series de televisión. Después de papeles menores en estrenos como películas de James Bond Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) y la película de terror Tale of the Mummy (1998). En el 2000 tomó el liderazgo, interpretando a Drácula en Drácula 2000 . Butler coprotagonizó películas como Reign of Fire (2002), junto a Christian Bale, y Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), con Angelina Jolie, antes de interpretar a André Marek en la adaptación de Michael Crichton. Cronología de aventuras de ciencia ficción (2003). Luego fue seleccionado para interpretar a Erik, El Fantasma en la adaptación cinematográfica de Joel Schumacher de 2004 del musical El Fantasma de la Ópera junto a Emmy Rossum, y Butterfly on a Wheel con Pierce Brosnan y Maria Bello. El debut televisivo de Butler empezó con el programa The Young Person's Guide to Becoming a Rock Star de 1998, interpretando a Marty Claymore y además en la miniserie Attila de 2001, Butler asumió el papel principal y al año siguiente fue elegido como Johnnie Donne en The Jury .
