The Pointer Sisters, grupo de soul formado en 1971 en Oakland, California, por las hermanas Bonnie Pointer, June Pointer, Anita Pointer y Ruth Pointer. Desde jóvenes estuvieron influidas por el gospel y el soul de The Staple Singers, Aretha Franklin y The Andrews Sisters. En 1971 firmaron con Blue Thumb Records. Su primer sencillo con cierto éxito fue "Yes We Can Can", una versión de un tema de Allen Toussaint en 1973. Dos años más tarde llegaron al número uno con el tema "How Long (Betcha' Got a Chick on the Side)". En 1978 Bonnie Pointer fue fichada por Motown consiguiendo éxitos como "Free Me From My Freedom" y "Tie Me to a Tree (Handcuff Me)". Anita Pointer y June Pointer también intentaron seguir en solitario durante los 80, pero no lo consiguieron. En 1979, ya siendo un trío y no un cuarteto, hicieron su propia versión de "Fire" de Bruce Springsteen, tomando una dirección en la discográfica Planet con la que dejaban de lado el soul para adentrarse en el urban, con temas como "He's So Shy" (1980), "Slow Hand" (1981), "Automatic" (1984) y "Jump (For My Love)" (1984). Uno de sus mayores hits se lanzó en 1982, dentro del disco "So excited", y que llevaba por nombre "I'm so excited". A medida que su sonido cambiaba durante el final de los 80, el grupo empezó a decaer. Desde principios de los 90 el grupo tan solo hacían apariciones esporádicas. En 1995 volvieron a la actualidad con el musical de Fats Waller "Ain't Misbehavin'". A lo largo de toda su carrera se hicieron con tres premios Grammy.[1]​
