Windows Mobile 7 con nombre en clave "Photon"[1]​ es una actualización importante al sistema Windows Mobile desarrollado por Microsoft, está previsto para el lanzamiento en 2010 .[2]​[3]​ Una versión beta estaba planificada para ser lanzada para los betatesters durante noviembre de 2009.[4]​ Inicialmente estaba destinada a ser liberada en 2009, pero varios retrasos causados a Microsoft le provocaron el lanzamiento de la versión 6.5 como punto de partida.[5]​ Mientras el 6.5 es de bajo esto, Windows Mobile 7 está diseñado para ofrecer una experiencia superior a la par con los dispositivos de la competencia, y ambos sistemas operativos (Windows mobile 6.5 y 7) coexistirán en el mercado.[6]​

It has been speculated that the screen shots were just concepts for Office Mobile 2010. It is uncertain whether or not the screen shots on Microsoft's website still represent Windows Mobile 7 today, as those screen shots were leaked over two years ago, and it may have been a diversion.[15]​ As of September 2009, there are over 1000 Microsoft developers and engineers working on Windows Mobile 7, and that number increases as Microsoft continues to post more job ads.[16]​ In comparison, there are over 3000 engineers and developers who work in the Windows Client division of Microsoft.[17]​ Some[¿quién?] have speculated that this number of employees shows how important and critical Windows Mobile 7 is to the company.[18]​

Windows Mobile 7 will incorporate elements of Windows Mobile 6.5 (Homescreen), and Zune, namely the Zune HD.[19]​[20]​ Windows Mobile 7 has also been shown in secrecy to various tech journalists, and was met with very positive reception.[21]​

Rumours originating from the technology blog site Engadget, suggest that Microsoft has intentions of extending its Xbox Live platform to the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 operating system, bringing with it "Xbox Live enabled games to Windows Mobile, avatar integration,social interaction, and multi-screen experiences" according to a job posting for a Principal Program Manager, who would help to make this a reality.[22]​

Windows Mobile 7 was later rumored to be due for release to manufacturing in April 2010,[15]​ but rumors indicate that device makers may not ship Windows Mobile 7 phones until later in 2010.[23]​[24]​[25]​[26]​ Windows Mobile 7 will be officially announced and demoed by Microsoft at Mobile World Congress in February 2010,[27]​ as well as their MIX conference in March 2010.[28]​[29]​ The software is currently being tested internally by Microsoft and its partners, and LG has announced that the first Windows Mobile 7 devices will debut as early as September 2010.[30]​[31]​[32]​
