Jared Diamond

Jared Mason Diamond, 10 de septiembre de 1937 (71 años), es un autor estadounidense de literatura científica, biólogo y fisiólogo evolucionista, y biogeógrafo. Doctor por la Universidad de Cambridge, Reino Unido es actualmente profesor de geografía en la Universidad de California (UCLA)

Se le conoce ante todo por su libro ganador del premio Pulitzer Armas, gérmenes y acero (Guns, Germs and Steel. 1997). Es autor también de Colapso. ¿Por qué unas sociedades perduran y otras desaparecen? (Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. 2004). En estos dos libros trata la evolución de ciertas sociedades a partir de factores materiales como condiciones ecológicas, disponibilidad de recursos e influencia de la tecnología, en una línea que lo acerca a autores que han tratado de explicar la historia desde posiciones materialistas.
