Saxon es una banda británica de heavy metal formada en 1976 por los miembros Biff Byford, Graham Oliver, Paul Quinn, Steve Dawson y Pete Gill. Fundados inicialmente bajo el nombre de Son Of a Bitch, no es hasta mediados de 1978 que deciden cambiar su nombre a Saxon.[1]​ Son considerados máximos líderes del movimiento "Nueva ola del heavy metal británico" iniciado a fines de la década de los setentas, junto a Iron Maiden y Def Leppard.[2]​ Iniciaron su carrera oficialmente en 1979 con su disco homónimo bajo Carrere Records,[2]​ sello con el que trabajaron además en los discos Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law, Denim and Leather y el álbum en vivo The Eagle Has Landed con los que alcanzaron una masiva popularidad en el Reino Unido lo que se vio reflejado en algunos discos de plata y oro[3]​ y además en que tres de estos entraron en los Top 10 del país inglés.[4]​ Sin embargo dicha popularidad la perdieron poco a poco desde Power and the Glory de 1983 y Crusader de 1984, por culpa de este sello discográfico lo que obligó a la banda a terminar su contrato tras el lanzamiento de este último disco de estudio.[2]​

Durante la segunda mitad de los años ochentas y bajo el sello EMI Music publicaron los trabajos Innocence Is No Excuse de 1985, Rock the Nations de 1986 y Destiny de 1988 con los que alcanzaron un poco de popularidad en los Estados Unidos con sonidos más cercanos al hard rock y al glam metal, pero nunca un éxito destacado como sí lo hicieron sus bandas amigas en dicho país,[5]​ pues la máxima posición de un trabajo de los ingleses en este mercado sólo alcanzó a entrar en los Top 200.

Ya en la década de los noventas y con un contrato firmado con Virgin Records, volvieron a cosechar gran éxito entre los fanáticos del heavy metal con los discos Solid Ball of Rock, Forever Free y Dogs of War, gracias a su reputación en las presentaciones en directo.[6]​

Con la llegada del nuevo milenio y con un nuevo contrato con el sello SPV/Steamhammer Records publican los álbumes Killing Ground, Lionheart, The Inner Sanctum, Into the Labyrinth con los que mantuvieron el éxito de la década anterior gracias a sus presentaciones en vivo esta vez en los mayores festivales de Europa, entre ellos el Wacken Open Air, lugar donde se extrajo material para los trabajos en vivo The Eagle Has Landed Part III, The Saxon Chronicles[7]​ y Heavy Metal Thunder - Live: Eagles Over Wacken.[8]​ En 2011 y con el sello UDR MUusic pusieron en el mercado el álbum Call to Arms, el que alcanzó a entrar en los Top 10 de la lista UK Rock Albums Chart.

Durante su extensa carrera de más de treinta años han lanzado diez y nueve álbumes de estudio, trece recopilatorios, seis álbumes en directo, treinta sencillos, diez y ocho videos musicales, cuatro DVD, cuatro VHS, dos cajas recopilatorias, tres EP e incluso un documental llamado Heavy Metal Thunder: The Movie.[9]​
