The Bangles (Las Pulseras) es uno de los primeros grupos formados exclusivamente por mujeres con una alineación funcional (no grupo vocal), a principio de los años ochenta influenciadas por el new wave y un tanto del estilo garage band.

Historia

The Bangles se formó en Los Ángeles, California en 1981, originalmente bajo el nombre de "The Supersonic Bangs", que luego se acortó a "The Bangs". Sin embargo, un grupo de Nueva Jersey también llamado "The Bangs" amenazó con demandarlas, por lo que cambiaron su nombre a The Bangles ( por su similitud con "The Beatles").

Las integrantes de la formación original del grupo eran:

• Susanna Hoffs (guitarra, voz)
• Debbi Peterson (batería, voz, bajo)
• Vicki Peterson (guitarra, voz, bajo)

Esta formación grabó un sencillo a 45 rpm: Getting out of Hand b/w Call on Me. Annette Zilinskas se convirtió en la bajista durante 1982, además de tocar la armónica. Con Ziliniskas, grabaron un larga duración titulado "The Bangles", en 1982. Al año siguiente, Zilinskas dejó el grupo y fue reemplazada por Michael Steele, que anteriormente tocaba con el grupo "The Runaways".

El álbum debut de The Bangles (con el sello Columbia, "All Over The Place" en el año 1984), puso en evidencia las raíces pop del grupo, captando la atención de Prince, quien escribió Manic Monday. Con este tema, alcanzaron el #2 en Estados Unidos.

En 1986, aparece el segundo larga duración de la banda: "Different light" (mejor elaborado que su predecesor), que incluía Maniac Monday y Walk Like an Egiptian, lo que permitió a la banda, establecerse como un éxito en todas las radios FM y en MTV.

En 1988, aparece el álbum titulado "Everything". Este fue otro éxito multi-platino, que incluía su sencillo de mayor venta, Eternal Flame, pero las relaciones de trabajo entre las integrantes del grupo se habían dañado, y el grupo se separó después de este álbum. Así, Susanna Hoffs inició su carrera como solista, y Vicki Peterson inició una gira con "The Go-Go's" y "Continental Drifters", Debbi Peterson se uniría con Siobhan Maher al corto proyecto llamado: "Kindred Spirit".

También alcanzaron el #2 con la versión de Simon y Garfunkel, Hazy Shade of Winter, incluída en la banda sonora de la película "Less Than Zero", y en el recopilatorio Grandes éxitos de 1990.

En el año 2000, se reunieron nuevamente para realizar una gira, y en 2001-2002, grabaron un nuevo álbum: "Doll Revolution". Un cover de Eternal Flame hecho por Atomic Kitten que alcanzó el #1 en Inglaterra. Este álbum con canciones como Stealing Rosemary, Ride the Ride, Nickel Romeo, y el single Something That You Said, fue lanzado al mercado a inicios del 2003. La versión japonesa del disco presenta canciones adicionales. En este mismo año, el grupo fue elevado al Salón de la Fama de Grupos Vocales.

En mayo del 2005, las integrantes de The Bangles, anunciaron la partida de Michael Steele, sin embargo, la banda no anunció si sería reemplazada o no.

En septiembre del 2011, salió "Sweetheart of the Sun", en donde se hace notar al grupo nuevamente como trío, al igual que en sus inicios. La canción Ana Lee (Sweetheart of the Sun), es el tema más sobresaliente de esta producción, que también incluye 2 covers: uno hecho al tema "Sweet and Tender Romance", del grupo británico femenil The McKinleys, de 1964 y al clásico del grupo The Nazz: "Open my Eyes", de 1968, escrita por Todd Rundgren.

Mucho se rumoreó de una posible relación entre Prince y Susanna, pero ella la desmintió.
