Pelagornithidae es una familia extinta en la prehistoria. Sus restos fósiles se han encontrado en todo el mundo en rocas que datan entre el Paleoceno tardío y el límite Plioceno-Pleistoceno.

Características

El Pelagornithidae tenía huesos muy delgados de paredes muy osificadas con presencia de aire en los mismos, provenientes de las extensiones del saco de aire de los pulmones. La mayoría de los fósiles encontrados están aplastados por la misma razón. Las patas eran proporcionalmente cortas, los pies palmeados y el dedo gordo, probablemente era rudimentario o ausente por completo, el tarsometatarso se asemeja al de los albatros, mientras que la disposición de los dedos de los pies delanteros se parecía más a los fulmares.
