La Liga de Irlanda se estableció en [[1921]] como "Liga del Estado Libre" (''Free State League''). Por entonces el campeonato estuvo formado por ocho equipos de [[Dublín]], y el primer campeón fue el [[Saint James's Gate Football Club|St. James's Gate FC]]. Con el paso de los años el campeonato se expandió a otros clubes del territorio irlandés, y estuvo dominado por tres equipos dublineses: [[Shamrock Rovers]], [[Bohemian Football Club|Bohemians]] y [[Shelbourne Football Club|Shelbourne]]. El primer conjunto que ganó la liga y no pertenecía a la capital fue el [[Dundalk FC]], en la temporada 1932/33.

En los [[años 1990]], el campeonato doméstico perdió importancia frente a la [[Premier League de Escocia|liga escocesa]] y la recién creada [[Premier League]] de [[Inglaterra]], que conllevó un sensible descenso en el número de espectadores. Para no coincidir con torneos más fuertes, los clubes adoptaron un nuevo calendario y las temporadas pasaron al verano, entre los meses de [[marzo]] y [[noviembre]]. == Formato ==

La temporada de la Liga de Irlanda se celebra en los meses de primavera y verano, y tiene lugar entre [[marzo]] y [[noviembre]]. El formato actual corresponde a un sistema de tres rondas entre los 12 equipos que conforman el campeonato. Por otra parte, la puntuación se establece sobre la base de las reglas de la [[UEFA]] con 3 puntos para el equipo ganador, 0 para el perdedor y 1 en caso de empate.

El equipo que termina en primera posición en la Premier Division se proclama campeón de liga, mientras que el último desciende de forma directa a la First Division, siendo reemplazado por el campeón de esa competición. Por su parte, el undécimo clasificado en Primera se enfrenta ante el ganador de un play-off entre el segundo y tercero de Segunda respectivamente, en un ''play off'' por la permanencia. Quien termina último en First Division debe ganar en un partido contra el campeón de la [[A Championship]], un campeonato no profesional, para evitar perder la categoría.

Anteriormente, las temporadas se jugaban en los meses de invierno con rondas simples a ida y vuelta y distintas expansiones de equipos. Hasta [[1985]] no existió una segunda división, que redujo el número de clubes a 12 y posteriormente a 10 en la máxima categoría. Desde el nuevo sistema de competición, los derechos de televisión se negocian entre la Federación de Irlanda y las televisiones de forma individual. Actualmente las cadenas en abierto [[RTÉ Two]] y [[TG4]] emiten un partido, del mismo modo que la cadena de televisión por cable [[Setanta Sports]]. Estos tres emisores se encargan también de retransmitir los resúmenes de la jornada y un programa sobre la liga, ''Monday Night Soccer''. La primera vez que se retransmitió un partido de fútbol irlandés en directo fue en [[1998]], ya que hasta la fecha solo se permitía emitirlos en diferido o en amplios resúmenes.

Los clubes están obligados a negociar de forma conjunta los derechos de acuerdo con los parámetros que establece la Federación, y todos ganan la misma cantidad. Los horarios de los partidos están realizados sobre la base de la demanda de las cadenas de televisión.

La Liga irlandesa de fútbol (en inglés y oficialmente League of Ireland, en gaélico Sraith na hÉireann, también conocida como Airtricity League por razones de patrocinio) es el campeonato profesional de fútbol de la República de Irlanda. El torneo fue creado en 1921 como una liga de ocho equipos, pero con el paso del tiempo se ha expandido a un campeonato de 20 clubes repartidos en dos categorías: una Primera División de 12 equipos (Premier Division) y una Segunda de 8 (First Division). Todos los equipos pertenecen a la República de Irlanda salvo el Derry City FC, de Irlanda del Norte.

Desde 2006 es la Asociación de Fútbol de Irlanda quien se encarga de la organización. Anteriormente eran los clubes participantes quienes se encargaban del torneo, pero los problemas económicos de los equipos obligaron a la Federación irlandesa a tomar el control del campeonato. Actualmente, el sistema ocupa el puesto número 40 entre las 55 ligas nacionales que forman parte de la UEFA.

El equipo que más ligas ha ganado es Shamrock Rovers, con 17 trofeos, mientras que el único club que ha participado en todas las ediciones en Primera es el Bohemian Football Club. Además de equipos irlandeses el torneo cuenta con un club de Irlanda del Norte, el Derry City FC, que ingresó en el sistema de liga en 1985.

Historia

La Liga de Irlanda se estableció en 1921 como "Liga del Estado Libre" (Free State League). Por entonces el campeonato estuvo formado por ocho equipos de Dublín, y el primer campeón fue el St. James's Gate FC. Con el paso de los años el campeonato se expandió a otros clubes del territorio irlandés, y estuvo dominado por tres equipos dublineses: Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians y Shelbourne. El primer conjunto que ganó la liga y no pertenecía a la capital fue el Dundalk FC, en la temporada 1932/33.

En décadas posteriores el torneo ganó popularidad entre los aficionados irlandeses, con los éxitos de clubes como el St Patrick's Athletic, el Cork United y el Waterford United en la década de 1960. La expansión de nuevos equipos conllevó la creación de una segunda división en 1985, formada por clubes con un presupuesto mucho menor. También se produjo el polémico ingreso del Derry City FC, un equipo de Irlanda del Norte, en el campeonato irlandés con la ayuda de la UEFA y la Federación norirlandesa.[1]​ En la década de 1980, Shamrock Rovers consiguió cuatro campeonatos de liga consecutivos hasta 1987 y se convirtió en la mayor potencia del fútbol nacional.

En los años 1990, el campeonato doméstico perdió importancia frente a la liga escocesa y la recién creada Premier League de Inglaterra, que conllevó un sensible descenso en el número de espectadores. Para no coincidir con torneos más fuertes, los clubes adoptaron un nuevo calendario y las temporadas pasaron al verano, entre los meses de marzo y noviembre. A su vez, se apostó por una mayor profesionalización en todos los equipos.

El gasto de los clubes comenzó a ser excesivo y muchos dejaron de ser rentables, lo que provocó un acuerdo entre la Liga y la Federación de Irlanda para que ésta dirigiera el torneo a partir de 2006.[2]​ Con la nueva dirección, los equipos debían cumplir unos requisitos mínimos para garantizar su continuidad o ascenso a la Premier irlandesa y todo el campeonato profesional, algo que provocó movimientos polémicos: en 2006 el Shelbourne fue descendido administrativamente por impagos a pesar de haber ganado la liga ese año,[3]​ del mismo modo que el Cork City desapareció y se bajó al Derry City en 2010 por presentar documentación falsa.[4]​[5]​

Poco a poco, el campeonato ha ganado importancia y seriedad entre las ligas adscritas a la UEFA, e Irlanda ha pasado del puesto 41 en 2000 al 30 en 2009.[6]​

Formato

La temporada de la Liga de Irlanda se celebra en los meses de primavera y verano, y tiene lugar entre marzo y noviembre. El formato actual corresponde a un sistema de tres rondas entre los 12 equipos que conforman el campeonato. Por otra parte, la puntuación se establece sobre la base de las reglas de la UEFA con 3 puntos para el equipo ganador, 0 para el perdedor y 1 en caso de empate.

El equipo que termina en primera posición en la Premier Division se proclama campeón de liga, mientras que el último desciende de forma directa a la First Division, siendo reemplazado por el campeón de esa competición. Por su parte, el undécimo clasificado en Primera se enfrenta ante el ganador de un play-off entre el segundo y tercero de Segunda respectivamente, en un play off por la permanencia. Quien termina último en First Division debe ganar en un partido contra el campeón de la A Championship, un campeonato no profesional, para evitar perder la categoría.

Anteriormente, las temporadas se jugaban en los meses de invierno con rondas simples a ida y vuelta y distintas expansiones de equipos. Hasta 1985 no existió una segunda división, que redujo el número de clubes a 12 y posteriormente a 10 en la máxima categoría. El sistema actual cuenta con la oposición de entrenadores y clubes, pero la Federación irlandesa no plantea modificarlo.[7]​

Competiciones europeas

El campeón de liga se clasifica para la UEFA Champions League, y parte desde la segunda fase de la ronda de clasificación. El segundo y tercer clasificado juegan la Liga Europea de la UEFA a partir de la primera ronda de clasificación. Además, el campeón de la Copa de Irlanda tiene una plaza en esa competición.

Medios

Radio y televisión

Desde el nuevo sistema de competición, los derechos de televisión se negocian entre la Federación de Irlanda y las televisiones de forma individual. Actualmente las cadenas en abierto RTÉ Two y TG4 emiten un partido, del mismo modo que la cadena de televisión por cable Setanta Sports. Estos tres emisores se encargan también de retransmitir los resúmenes de la jornada y un programa sobre la liga, Monday Night Soccer. La primera vez que se retransmitió un partido de fútbol irlandés en directo fue en 1998, ya que hasta la fecha solo se permitía emitirlos en diferido o en amplios resúmenes.

Los clubes están obligados a negociar de forma conjunta los derechos de acuerdo con los parámetros que establece la Federación, y todos ganan la misma cantidad. Los horarios de los partidos están realizados sobre la base de la demanda de las cadenas de televisión.

Patrocinio

El actual patrocinador de la Liga es Airtricity, compañía de energías renovables, con un contrato desde 2012. Anteriormente han sido patrocinadores del torneo la empresa gasista Bord Gáis y la telefónica Eir.
