John Lynch (historiador)

John Lynch (Boldon, Reino Unido, 11 de enero de 1927),^[1] es un historiador, hispanista y americanista británico, considerado una autoridad en los campos de la Historia de España, de la Independencia americana y de los nuevos países hispanoamericanos.

Biografía

Nació en el norte de Inglaterra, en Boldon, condado de Durham. Estudió en la Universidad de Edimburgo (MA, 1952) y en la Universidad de Londres, donde se doctoró en 1955. Sirvió en el ejército británico después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial desde 1945 a 1948. Enseñó en la Universidad de Liverpool (1954-61) y desde 1961 en la Universidad de Londres, donde se jubiló; actualmente es profesor emérito de Historia de Latinoamérica; fue director de su Institute of Latin American Studies^[2] (Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos, hoy Instituto de las Américas), entre 1974 y 1987. En 2006 publicó la biografía de Simón Bolívar y en 2009 la de José Francisco de San Martín. Está casado con Wendy Kathleen Norman desde 1960 y tiene cinco hijos.

Desde 1986 es miembro correspondiente de la Real Academia de la Historia española.^[3]
