Nancy Drew es personaje creado por el escritor estadounidense Edward Stratemeyer, fundador del Sindicato Stratemeyer (responsable de la producción de varias series literarias de misterio, incluyendo The Hardy Boys y Tom Swift), y publicada por primera vez en 1930. Es la protagonista de varias series de novelas de misterio para niños y adolescentes, mismas que han sido escritas por varios autores fantasma y lanzadas a la venta bajo la firma colectiva «Carolyn Keene».[1]

Conforme transcurre el tiempo, la joven detective ha evolucionado al mismo tiempo que la cultura y preferencias de las audiencias de lectores estadounidenses. Cabe señalarse que, desde 1959, cada uno de los libros en los que aparece el personaje han pasado por profundas revisiones, con el fin de eliminar estereotipos raciales,[2]​ lo cual pasó a ser objeto de numerosas discusiones.[3][4]​ Al respecto, varios académicos coinciden en que durante el proceso de revisión, la heroína original, caracterizada primordialmente por su franqueza, se volvió más moderada y dócil, además de convencional y remilgada.[5]​ En los años 1980, se creó una nueva serie, The Nancy Drew Files, en la cual se incorporó a una Nancy más profesional y adulta, envuelta en historias con mayor contenido romántico.[6]​ En 2004, la original Nancy Drew Mystery Stories concluyó, lanzándose en su lugar una nueva serie llamada Girl Detective, la cual constituye una versión actualizada de Nancy Drew, quien ahora conduce un vehículo híbrido y usa un dispositivo celular. Otro rasgo que ha variado considerablemente con el paso de los años es la imagen de la detective, la cual ha pasado de ser una joven intrépida y activa a una mujer temerosa y pasiva.[7]
