Los prototerios (Prototheria) son una subclase de mamíferos cuya jerarquía taxonómica presenta ciertas controversias, especialmente con relación a la clase sin jerarquizar Australosphenida. Incluye mayoritariamente especies fósiles y 5 especies vivas: el ornitorrinco y las cuatro especies de equidnas
McKenna y Bell propusieron una jerarquía resumida en el cladograma siguiente:[1]
