Las salamandras apulmonadas (Plethodontidae) son un clado de anfibios caudados compuesto por más de 300 especies.[1] Las especies de esta familia son de tamaño reducido, careciendo de pulmones y presentando ranuras nasolabiales con quimiorreceptores. Al no poseer pulmones respiran a través de la piel y los epitelios ubicados en la cavidad bucofaríngea. La fecundación es interna, presentando las hembras una espermateca en la cual almacenan los espermatóforos (estructuras gelatinosas que poseen espermatozoides) que deposita el macho.
