History
Tanneries in Porto do Souto
Porto do Souto devoted from the century to the curtido of skins, benefiting of his vicinity to the river Silvaboa and of the abundance of oak, whose rind is fundamental for the process of curtido thanks to his tall content of tannins[11].
The traditional methods employees were laborious and were deeply rooted in the local traditions, starring the production of leather in the region until very gone in the century .[12]
Porto do Souto is an example stood out of how the industrial activities mixed with the residential, creating a community centred around the curtidurías, aldeas-factory, essential places to understand the rural socioeconomic dynamics of Galicia.[13]
The closing of the curtidurías in the century because of the mechanisation and the centralisation produced a negative impact in the local economy.[14][15] I carry do Souto conserves historical edifices and ruins of his ancient industry.[16] These places remember the industrial past of the aldea and form part of the cultural heritage of Galicia.[17][18][19]
