Choosing a Puppy
Before you adopt or buy a puppy, be sure to look him over carefully. Here are some specific things you should look for in choosing a healthy puppy.
Eyes. They should be clear and without discharge.

Ears. They should be clean, with no ear mites or infection. (Ear mites look like brown or black sand)
Mouth. Tongue and gums should be pink and the bite correct.
Nose. It should not be runny. The puppy shouldn’t be sneezing.
Coat. It should be clean and glossy with no bare spot.
The skin should not have any sores or dry or irritated patches.
Stomach. Bloating can indicate internal parasites. Check for a hernia at the belly button.
Age. The puppy should be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned.
Also, remember that puppies chew naturally because they are teething and they’re curious. Keep forbidden items picked up and out of his reach. And, maintain a good supply of safe, appropriate chew toys.
Helpful Hints
• Don’t feed your dog or cat fatty table scraps. It will teach him to beg and could give him heart disease.
• To help prevent dental problems in dogs and cats, brush their teeth with baking soda using a toothbrush or your finger. Feed your pet crunchy foods. This also helps reduce plaque buildup.
• To quiet a crying puppy, wrap a loud, ticking clock and put it in her bed.

Cats in History: Ancient Egypt
In ancient Egypt, cats were held in high esteem because they kept rodents from the Egyptian grain storehouses along the Nile River and because they were believed to bring many children to a family. Bastet, the goddess of the home and of the domestic cat, was often depicted in sculptures and drawings with a cat's head and human body. The Egyptians has a huge festival at Bast honoring the cat goddess, who was also known as the goddess of fertility and beauty.
Punishment for harming cats was severe. Because of their special places in the lives of Egyptians, after death, they were mummified and placed in the tombs of their owners or in special cat tombs along the Nile River. Sometimes, a bowl of milk and mummified mice and toys were placed in the tomb to comfort the cat in its journey to the afterlife.
