The exact dates of the Central American migration to Mexico are unknown. The migration dates back to before the establishment of the State-nation in 1821. The formal creation of the border between Guatemala and Mexico[1] in 1822 displaced populations but they seemed unaffected. Because of the agricultural handouts offered under the Lázaro Cárdenas del Rio administration, conquered Guatemalans in Chiapas towns in what is now southern Mexico [2], opted for Mexican citizenship in order to become creditors of a land endowment.[3]

The Central American migration to Mexico, consequently, is a social process deeply rooted and rejuvenated with new influxes of migration and new circumstances that stimulated people to move both temporarily and permanently. There are many qualitative reasons that account for the distinct influxes of migration and there is a budding discussion about the quantitative reasons. The government registries are biased, incomplete, contain discontinuities, and are difficult to consult because of the lack of documentation. The private files, apart from suffering from the same problems, are even more difficult to review because they continue to physically deteriorate. The rough condition of the files causes studies about the topic to cautiously use numerical references and often omit them completely. Although it is risky sometimes the population numbers are manipulated, and estimates are often made by calculating the number of workers necessary to harvest a certain area. However, there is not a way to say with certainty the volume of any influx of migration at one specific time or definite area. The one exception is the immigrants in refugee camps assisted by the Mexican authorities and international organizations. Even though academic research is focused on the influxes of Central American immigrants in the south part of Mexico, further analysis continues to broaden the horizon.
