Puy Oria Rubio (Torres del Rio, Navarra, 1962) is a Spanish businesswoman in the film industry, who founded the audiovisual production company Oria Films. She was nominated in 2006 for the Goya Awards in the category of Best Production Director for the film Obaba[1]​ and winner in 2019 of the Simone de Beauvoir Award at the XXIV Film Festival directed by women (XXIV Zinemakumeak gara!).[2]​

Career

She graduated in Philosophy and Educational Sciences at the University of Navarra in 1986.[3]​ She was working in the area of environmental education, when the producer Elías Querejeta hired her to go to settlements of immigrants in an irregular situation and to record their testimonies on video. With those testimonies a script was later developed that, at first, was to be a documentary but ended up being the feature film, Letters from Alou, directed by Montxo Armendáriz in 1990.[4]​ When she finished her work on the film, she did not return to her teaching post and contiued to dedicate herself to filmmaking, taking part of the production teams of numerous films, including Dream of Light (1990) by Víctor Erice, Jamón, Jamón (1992) by Bigas Luna,[5]​ Días Contados (1994) by Imanol Uribe, The Turkish Passion (1994) by Vicente Aranda, Stories from the Kronen (1994) by Montxo Armendáriz, La Ley de la Frontera (1995) by Adolfo Aristarain,[6]​ Deep Crimson (1996) by Arturo Ripstein,[7]​ Secrets of the Heart (film) (1996) by Montxo Armendáriz, Such Is Life (2000 film) (1999) by Arturo Ripstein or Word and Utopia (1999) by Manoel de Oliveira.[8]​

In 1999, she set up, together with Montxo Armendáriz, the audiovisual production company Oria Films,[9]​ a company with which she has produced, among others, the feature films Broken Silence (2001) by Montxo Armendáriz, La Guerrilla de la Memoria (1992) by Javier Corcuera Andrino, Obaba (2005) by Montxo Armendáriz, Don't Be Afraid (film) (2011) by Montxo Armendariz or Chrysalis (2012) by Paula Ortiz.[10]​

In addition to her work in film production, Oria is dedicated to other activities related to this industry. Since mid-2000, she has been teaching different courses, workshops or master classes on audiovisual production and other aspects related to filmmaking, at organizations and institutions such as Menéndez Pelayo International University, Universidad Internacional de Valencia, Escuela de Cine de Alcorcón, Community of Madrid, Public University of Navarre, Escuela Universitaria de Artes TAI, University of Granada, Notodofilmfest, Escuela Superior de Cine y Audiovisuales de Cataluña (ESCAC), Filmoteca de Catalunya,[3]​ University of Alicante,[11]​ International University of La Rioja (UNIR),[12]​ Encuentro de Jóvenes Talentos (Ibertalent),[13]​ Escuela de Cine de Cádiz,[3]​ University of Cádiz,[4]​ Provincial Council of Jaén [14]​ or Festival Internacional de Cine de Almería (FICAL).[15]​

Since 2017, Oria presides over the audiovisual management consultant ConsultOria Films, a company that she started up with several colleagues who make up a multidisciplinary group for the comprehensive online assessment of audiovisual projects and that it was born with the vocation of being a meeting place for the sector.[16]​

She has also collaborated with several film festivals. In 2013 he was a jury member for the short film competition Navarra, tierra de cine, to promote tourism in Navarra and also to make it known as a film set.[17]​ The next year, she was at the 40th edition of the Festival de Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva.[18]​ In 2016, she collaborated as a jury in the Certamen de Largometrajes Ópera Prima that took place in the XV edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine Almería (FICAL).[19]​ That same year, she also participated in the 22nd edition of the Festival Ibérico de Cinema (FIC), in Extremadura, whose objective is to promote short films.[20]​

Oria has been part of different associations and entities such as Asociación Madrileña del Audiovisual (AMA), where she was president since its constitution in 2007, until 2018.[21]​ She has collaborated with the Culture Councils of the Communities of Madrid and Navarre. She has taken part in the Advisory Committee of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and she is part of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain.[22]​ In 2018, she was elected president of the Productoras Independientes Audiovisuales Federadas (PIAF) and thus became the first woman to hold a position of similar characteristics in the Spanish audiovisual world, since the presidents of the Confederación de Productores Audiovisuales Españoles (FAPAE), which disappeared in early 2018 and is the immediate predecessor of PIAF, had been Gerardo Herrero, Eduardo Campoy, Pedro Pérez and Ramón Colom.[23]​

Oria has committed herself to various causes. In 2012, she was one of more than 400 national and international people from the world of cinema who signed the statement of support to José Luis Cienfuegos, who was dismissed as director of the Gijón International Film Festival at the beginning of 2011, after 16 years of work.[24]​ In 2015, she supported with her signature the manifesto against terrorism, Islamophobia, wars, cuts in freedoms and bombings, Not in Our Name.[25]​ In 2020, she was one of more than 600 women who registered in less than a month in the RAMPA platform: Red Abierta de Mujeres Profesionales del Audiovisual, an initiative to fight the gender gap in the audiovisual sector, which set up from the Film Festival made by Women.[26]​

Awards and recognition

In 2006, she was nominated for the Goya Awards in the category of Best Production Director for the feature film Obaba.[27]​ On December 10, 2015, the Festival Internacional de Cine y Derechos Humanos-Humans Fest, in its seventh edition, awarded Puy Oria and Montxo Armendáriz the Pau i Justicia Prize, with which it recognizes every year professional film careers dedicated to the defense of human rights.[28]​ In 2017, she was one of the five women honored at the Ciclo de Cine al aire libre de Bueño (Asturias) for having left her mark on the recent history of Spanish cinema.[29]​ She was the winner of the Simone de Beauvoir 2019 Award, which recognizes her extensive career and awarded her the XXIV Zinemakumeak gara! (XXIV Muestra de cine dirigido por mujeres).[30]​ She is also one of the 12 elected board members of the Real Sociedad Económica Matritense de Amigos del País.[31]​

She is also a member of the board of directors of the Real Sociedad Económica Matritense de Amigos del País.[36]​


Puy Oria Rubio (Torres del Rio, Navarre, 1962) is a Spanish film producer. Some of his most recognised films are Obaba and Don't Be Afraid (film) and Secrets of the Heart (film).[37]​

Career

Oria started her film career with Elías Querejeta in Letters from Alou (Montxo Armendáriz,1990).[38]​ Then, she was involved in production work on movies such as Dream of Light (Víctor Erice,1990), Jamón, Jamón (Bigas Luna, 1992), ¡Dispara! (Carlos Saura,1993), Días Contados (Imanol Uribe, 1994), The Turkish Passion (Vicente Aranda, 1994), La ley de la frontera (Adolfo Aristarain, 1995), Stories from the Kronen (Montxo Armendáriz, 1994), and Deep Crimson (Arturo Ripstein, 1996).[39]​

In 1999, she set up, together with Montxo Armendáriz, the audiovisual production company Oria Films, a company with which she has produced, among others, the feature films Broken Silence (Montxo Armendáriz, 2001), La Guerrilla de la Memoria (Javier Corcuera,1992), Obaba (Montxo Armendáriz, 2005), Don't Be Afraid (Montxo Armendáriz, 2011).[40]​

She has taught on the subject of audio-visual production courses, lectures and workshops,[41]​ has also collaborated with several film festivals as a jury member and she has held positions in associations, as Asociación Madrileña del Audiovisual (AMA), where she was president since its constitution in 2007, until 2018.[42]​ she is a member of Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain.[43]​ Since 2018, president of the PIAF (Federation of Independent Audio-visual Production Companies).[44]​
