Primarias presidenciales
En 2008 intentó conseguir la nominación del partido para presentarse como candidato a la presidencia en las elecciones de noviembre de 2009, pero fue derrotado por el vicepresidente Elvin Ernesto Santos.
Designación como Presidente de Honduras
Fue designado Presidente de Honduras [1]en funciones por el Congreso de la República el 28 de junio de 2009, tras la detención y posterior deportación a Costa Rica del presidente Manuel Zelaya, un acto catalogado de "golpe de estado" por la comunidad internacional. Con la ausencia del presidente, la Constitución dicta que el Presidente del Congreso debe ejercer el cargo provisional de Jefe de Estado, sin embargo, Zelaya asegura haber sido depuesto inconstitucionalmente.
