Gustavo Zingg (Hamburgo, 1878 -Caracas, 1963) German Traderand businessman. Hired by the commercial house of Maracaibo, C.W. Christern & Co., founded on January 16, 1876, arrived in Venezuela in April 1899. It helps to develop the activities of the Christern house in the business of dry goods, essentially coffee, in the representation of the German shipping line Hamburg- Amerika and in the tannery industry, having acquired the Christern house, in 1879, one of the first tanneries in Maracaibo, probably one of the oldest in the country. In 1912, he became a partner in the commercial establishment where he works, changing his company name to Christern, Zingg & Co. For the year 1914, the firm was listed as one of the main exporters of coffee and cocoa in the country. In 1925, Gustavo Zingg founded the Zulia Brewery, one of the most important in Venezuela at the time, in 1930 he bought the Christern family's stake in the business house of which he is a partner, creating the firm G. Zingg & Co. , whose headquarters moved to Caracas in 1932, maintaining branches in Maracaibo and Puerto Cabello, where it installed a wholesale hardware business. In 1939 he inaugurated the new G. Zingg & Co. building, located on the corner of Sociedad de Caracas, which includes a commercial passage, the Zingg passage, as well as the first known escalator in the country. Placed on the "black list" as a German citizen (1941-1944), he must dispose of his shares in the Zulia Brewery. This becomes part of the Caracas Brewery group. He acquired Venezuelan nationality after the Second World War and remained at the head of his companies until his death, specializing in the tannery and footwear industries.
