Roman. Thetwo heads of protecting genii that project fromthe spandrels of the arch appear on representa-tions of Etruscan gates on the urns and sar-cophagi and are paralleled in the Etruscan gateof Volterra; they also are not Roman. The falsegallery or frieze of psuedo-Ionic pilasters withshields or rosettes occupying the intervals is oneof the commonest forms of decoration on Etrus-can urns and sarcophagi. The upper galleryfilled with defenders of the gate can be seen onmore than one carved representation of a citygate on Etruscan urns. This covers every feature of the gate. Notone appears on a Roman gate except as a deriva-tive from Etruscan sources; every one occurs onEtruscan works of the fourth to second centuriesB.C. Of course Etruscan gates had no inscrip-tions and provided no place for any, and nobetter proof of the pre-Roman constructioncould be asked than the fact that when Augustusset his seal on the reconstructed city and wishedto christen it anew after himself as Augusta
