Handbook of Trees of the Xorthern States and Canada. 209 The Canada Plum attains the heif^ht of 20or 25 ft. and its trunk is occasionally 10 or 12in. in thickness. It develops a broad or roundedtop of many stiff and more or less contortedbranches and small somewhat zigzag branch-lets. In the month of May its heretofore bare andblackened branches suddenly burst into a pro-fusion of flowers and is at once aswarm withmyriads of bees, gathering their first harvestof the summer from its abundant nectar. Atthis season it is a beautiful and conspicuousobject. Its orange and red fruit ripens in Augustand is valued both for immediate eating andfor preserves and jellies. The quality of fruitvaries considerably and some attention is beingpaid by pomologists to propagating and im-proving the better varieties.
