Cuba está ubicada en una región con diferentes sistemas de fallas con una importante actividad sísmica. Aproximadamente 70% de los eventos sísmicos en Cuba se producen en la zona de falla de Oriente que se encuentra a lo largo de la costa sureste de la isla.[1] Terremotos destructivos que se produjeron en la falla del Oriente son los de 1776 (Mi=7.6), 1852 (Mi=7.2) y 1932 (Ms=6.75), entre otros.[2] Algunos estudios sugieren que existe una alta probabilidad de que la falla de Oriente genere un sismo con magnitud 7 en el futuro próximo.[3]
