Pump It Up, abreviado también como PIU o simplemente acortado a Pump, es una serie de videojuegos arcade de simulación de baile lanzado por Andamiro en 1999. Consta de una máquina con una pantalla, altavoces, luces y un tablero de diez paneles que se coloca en el suelo, este a su vez consta de botones con ocho flechas y dos botones centro, en la pantalla se indica cual o cuales se debe pisar para lograr una puntuación; un jugador individual solo podría jugar con cinco paneles, según se desee el modo de jugabilidad.

En la pantalla aparece un destellante neón con todas las flechas y además, flechas de colores que señalan qué sensores son los que se deben pisar y el orden para pisarlos, incluyendo un video que sirve tanto como apoyo visual de la canción, como un medio de distracción al jugador.

Modalidades de juego

Las modalidades de juego hasta la versión "The Prex" son Normal, Hard, Crazy (que se llamó Extra Expert en la versión EXTRA), Double, Battle y Non-Stop Remix. Ésta última incluye remixes de las canciones ya incluidas, las cuales son mucho más difíciles en relación al original y duran aproximadamente el doble que una canción común.

Las modalidades de juego en versión "The Prex 3 " en adelante son Normal, Hard, Crazy, Battle, Double o Freestyle, Nightmare y Half-Double. Normal, Hard y Crazy son distintas dificultades de juego ultilizando un solo lado del tablero. En Freestyle y Nightmare un sólo jugador utiliza el tablero completo. La modalidad Battle aparece en vez de Freestyle o Nightmare si hay dos personas jugando, y consiste en un juego de enfrentamiento donde gana el jugador con mayor puntuación. En las últimas versiones del juego, ésta modalidad ha sido sustituida por Combo Battle, donde gana el jugador que ejecute el mayor combo. Al finalizar cada ronda de juego, se muestran en la pantalla las estadísticas de cada jugador y sus calificaciones, que pueden ser F, D, C, B, A, S (AA),SS (AAA) (siendo F la mínima calificación y SS la máxima) dependiendo de los puntos adquiridos en la canción. Las modalidades de juego en versión "Exceed" en adelante ya no se basan en dificultades, sino en estaciones: Arcade Station: Aquí están las canciones de siempre, subdivididas en 4 canales: BanYa Channel (cambiando de nombre a "PIU Original o Original songs" en la version NX2): Contiene todas las canciones compuestas por "BanYa" (Beethoven virus, Winter, Solitary 2, etc). Pop Channel (cambiando de nombre a "World Music" en la version Fiesta 2010) : Contiene canciones del tipo hip hop, salsa y pop internacionales. K-Pop Channel (Cambiando de nombre a " Kpop Style" en la version NX2): Contiene temas exclusivamente en Coreano New Tunnes:Conteniendo las canciones nuevas que han salido en esa versión de Pump It Up(Este canal hizo su primera aparición en la NX New Xenesis) . Siguiendo con las estaciones: Remix Station: Contiene muchos remixes de canciones, extremadamente difíciles y largas. Algunos temas duran hasta el cuádruple de una canción común. Battle Station: Sólo disponible con 2 jugadores, contiene temas adaptados para batallas. Luego de esto, se elige la canción y recién luego se elige la dificultad: Normal, Hard, Crazy, (si se está jugando de a 2, y Freestyle y Nightmare si se juega de a 1).

En la versión "Zero" desaparece el modo "Battle Station" y se añaden las modalidades de "Remix Station","Mission Station", el cual consta en jugar canciones específicas con ciertos objetivos, para así, habilitar contenido adicional, y "Easy Station" el cual esta diseñado para jugadores principiantes con canciones de nivel 3 o inferior.

En la versión "New Xenesis" existen el tradicional Arcade Station, un modo de juego similar a la versión "The Prex 3", el Special Zone, donde se pueden elegir canciones cuya duración es más larga, y donde se pueden elegir "another steps", que son canciones elegibles en Arcade Station, con pasos distintos, el Training Station, donde el jugador puede mejorar sus habilidades con canciones diseñadas para ese propósito, y el World Tour, el equivalente al "Mission Station" en la versión Zero.

En la versión (NX2, Next Xenesis)", desaparece el World Tour por el World Max, donde simula ser un mundo virtual de la Pump It Up, dividido en varios reinos, donde se encuentran las canciones seleccionadas para cada reino (Full Songs, Remixies y Canciones del Arcade Station), donde la misma máquina escoje el modo en que debe bailar el jugador, y el mismo jugador obtiene puntos si logra pasar la misión, y se utiliza por primera vez la "USB flash drive".

En la version "NXA" (NX Absolute) se expande el "World Max" siendo el doble de misiones que en la version NX2, desaparece el modo "Training Station" siendo sustituido por la "Easy Station" apareciendo por primera vez en la "Zero", pero con mucho mas canciones que la version "Zero" y aparece por primera vez el "Brain Shower" en el que su modo de juego consiste en diversos retos de intelecto dividido en 3 canales "Matematicas", "Memoria", y "Colores" en esta estacion se pueden jugar 2 personas con un credito.

En la version "Fiesta", desaparece el World Max por el Quest World y aparecen las modalidades Skill Up Zone, el Mission Zone. el Music Train y el "Shortcut" y desaparecen los "Another Steps"

Pirateria

A partir de 2004 cuando se estrenó la versión Pump It Up Exceed apareció la Prex para PC y desde ese momento también salieron varios programas con los cuales se sabe que se puede modificar la versión Prex 3 para PC, tanto en su diseño como en las canciones entre uno de ellos están Piu studio v10 y Step edit 3.9, entre otros

En este tipo de versiones "pirata" los pasos de las canciones no concordancia de tiempo o ritmo de la canción con respecto a los pasos indicados en pantalla, el ambiente gráfico es muy básico ya que se trata de una versión antigua modificada y los fondos de los vídeos los mismos de la versión Prex 3 o simplemente no tienen, por lo tanto no semejantes ni mejores que una versión original.

Problemas legales

Konami inició un juicio en Seúl, Corea, contra Andamiro el año 2000, alegando que Pump It Up infringia la patente de diseño de Dance Dance Revolution. La corte falló a favor de Konami, pero Andamiro apeló. En el mismo tiempo Andamiro demandó a Konami en el estado de California, reclamando que DDR violaba sus patentes de Pump It Up. Ambos juicios fueron resueltos fuera de la corte, y los detalles nunca se dieron a conocer al público.

Pump It Up Pro & Infinity

Pump It Up Pro (Abreviado PIUPRO o Pump Pro) es un derivado de Pump It Up y desarrollado aparte de la saga internacional. Fue creada con el propósito principal de atraer a jugadores acostumbrados a los 4 paneles a un juego de 5 paneles. El motor del juego es un StepMania 4 altamente modificado. Es desarrollado en conjunto con los creadores del juego de baile In the Groove, luego de haber perdido una demanda por Konami debido al diseño y modo de juego. Es debido a esto que el modo de juego en la saga Pro es muy similar al de In The Groove.

La primera versión de esta saga traía canciones que iban desde PIU 1st hasta NX2, ademas de algunas canciones del juego In The Groove. También tenia actualizaciones mediante USB, la revisión 5 le permitio a los operadores de la maquina instalar packs de canciones, el primero de ellos, Pump it Up Pro: Encore, fue liberado en Agosto de 2008. Los packs de canciones no eran descargables y se distribuían en memorias USB autenticadas con el número de serie de la máquina.

Pump It Up Pro 2 traía nuevas canciones y nuevos courses, y si el sistema detectaba que el hardware era un MK9 el juego presentaba una mayor calidad gráfica.

Otra secuela, Infinity fue lanzada en marzo de 2013. Sin embargo, Infinity se aleja de lo que es la saga PRO, e incorpora características de la saga principal de PIU, como modos de juego orientado mas a PIU y mejoras en las gráficas. También ha recibido soporte de el personal de desarrollo de la versión internacional. El motor del juego es ahora un StepMania 5

WPF

El WPF (World Pump It Up Festival) es un Evento Mundial en el cual se reunen los mejores jugadores del mundo con el fin de competir. El pase al WPF se da después de que en cada país se haya realizado un Nacional. De este evento nacional salen los representantes a las diferentes categorías oficiales para el WPF/Mundial (Speed Masculino, Speed Femenino, y Freestyle o Performance).
