THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAINT JOHN NOTE.—The writer of the Gospel according to St. John was the youngest of the 12; also the younger of the two sous of Zebedee, a fisherman,who resided at Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee. He was one of the disciples of John the Baptist, before the coming of Christ. His greatest distinctionwas his admission to the bosom place with his Lord at the table, as the disciple whom Jesus loved; and for this reason the Master, while on thecross, committed his mother to Johns keeping. His Gospel is specially characterized by being reflective in character rather than narrative. John wrotewhat he saw as an eye witness. He wrote with a courage that says, I know whereof I speak because I saw it; therefore he must be believed absolutelyor Impeached altogether.
