English: This is a solar active region with sunspot however the dramatic part is the very broad AFS (arch filament system) which has developed between areas of opposite polarity. Sunspots and associated active regions are the are areas where the sun's internal magnetic fields break through the photosphere. When viewed with a visible spectrum instrument, you see just a black spot with radial tendrils emanating outward. Just above the photosphere in the chromosphere, the magnetically sensitive ionized hydrogen is pushed and pulled by the powerful magnetic fields breaking free from the sun's interior. This ionized hydrogen takes the form of the magnetic flux lines similar to iron filings on a sheet of paper with a magnet underneath. While these shapes are invisible when looking at the full visible spectrum, they become clearly defined when we isolate specific atomic emission lines such as H-alpha. H-alpha is the light emitted as the Hydrogen electron moves to a lower power state, specifically from the third to second orbital.
