El PWI Wrestler of the Year Award o PWI Premio al Luchador del año, es un reconocimiento entregado anualmente desde 1972 por la revista de lucha libre profesional Pro Wrestling Illustrated, reconociendo al mejor luchador profesional del año, el cual es elegido por los lectores de la revista.
Historia
Este premio fue entregado por primera vez en 1972, al luchador Pedro Morales de la empresa World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). Durante las 4 próximas entregas fueron galardonados Jack Brisco, Bruno Sammartino, Mr. Wrestling II y Terry Funk. En 1977 y 1978 el premio fue para Dusty Rhodes, representante de la National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).
Durante los cinco años posteriores, los galardonados fueron Harley Race (1979 y 1983), Bob Backlund (1980 y 1982) y Ric Flair (1981). En 1984, Flair obtuvo su segundo premio, mientras que en 1985 y 1986 volvió a ser el ganador. Los dos años posteriores, los miembros de la World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Hulk Hogan y Randy Savage fueron premiados y en 1989, Ric Flair obtuvo el premio por quinta vez.
En 1990, Sting ganó el premio por primera y única vez hasta la fecha. Luego, entre 1991 y 1993, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair y Vader fueron los ganadores, respectivamente. Hogan obtuvo su tercer y último premio en 1994, mientras que un año después Diesel lo obtuvo por primera vez. En 1996 y 1997 fueron dos miembros de la World Championship Wrestling (WCW) los premiados, The Giant y Lex Luger.
Desde 1998 a 2009 solamente miembros de la World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment (WWF / WWE) han sido los ganadores: Steve Austin en 1998, 1999 y 2001; The Rock en 2000; Brock Lesnar en 2002; Kurt Angle en 2003; Chris Benoit en 2004; Batista en 2005; John Cena en 2006 y 2007; Triple H en 2008; y Randy Orton en 2009.
