On March 24, 1858 a General Directorate of Security and Public Order was already created, 1 Manuel Ruiz del Cerro being appointed to the post . However, this body would have a very short existence, and in October of that year it was dissolved.

In 1886 a General Directorate of Security was re-created, under the Ministry of the Interior , which centralized all police services and security forces existing at the time. 2 3 As the first Director General Security was named Marshal Antonio Dabán and Ramirez de Arellano . 2 The agency was abolished in July 1888, although it would be re-created at the end of 1912. Thereafter, the new agency became an important spring of public order government policies.

Between June 1921 and November 1923 the agency was called the "General Directorate of Public Order", then recovering its original name.
