95. Weaver in Bagirmi. TO GARUA VIA LAI 103 beads wound round their necks and bodies. These, with a cap made of white beads, are their only attemptat clothing. The Government has tried to introduce the use ofmoney, but without much success, at any rate in the Province, for the people seldom leave their villagesand do not know what to do with their money. Inthe town the gurs, or Maria - Theresa thaler,is current, and even francs are willingly accepted. The taxes are still paid everywhere in the form ofiron knives of various shapes, two of which arereckoned as being equivalent to 50 centimes. The in-terior of a warehouse containing 10,000 francs worthof these knives can readily be imagined, and the desireto introduce a coinage is not unreasonable. Afterleaving Lai we employed bearers again, eighty-two innumber, and sent the oxen back to the Shari. Wehalted at Draingolo (illus. 106), a large Kaba fishingvillage, as evidenced by numerous fishing pots and fishdrying apparatus. (Illus. 107.)
