alleys beneath is very precipitous. The town contains a church,119 houses, and a wretched little school. The inhabitants areless hospitable than those of Ishuatlan, and given to many vices.Moloacan boasts of a great antiquity, and its settlement bearsdate anterior to the Conquest; but the landholders are with-out titles, and the immense plains of Gavilanes on the north,though cultivated to some extent, are still held by the govern-ment. The principal products are maize and ixtle, of which lat-ter, more than 25,000 pounds are annually raised. Within elevenmiles of this town, on the road to the Hacienda of San Jose,there is an extensive spring of petroleum, which covers an areaof several acres. Of the value of this spontaneous product it isunnecessary to speak. ISTo difficulty exists in the way of itstransportation to the river; and the supply is said to be inex-haustible. Farther beyond, in the potrero of Ojapa, is a pool ofsulphur-water; and near the western base of the Cerro Acalapa,

TOWNS, PRODUCTIVE INDUSTRY, ETC. 231 is a mine of rock-salt, which, in times past, was extensivelyworked, but is now abandoned and grown over. The shale hereis dark and very carboniferous, and the abundance of iron ore(red haematite) throughout all this locality deserves particularmention, and may eventually justify the establishment of furna-ces for its reduction. At a distance of seven miles from Moloa-can is the extensive Hacienda of San Antonio, which is irrigatedby the river from whence it takes its name. The numerousvaluable building sites on this estate—its proximity to the nav-igable rivers—the rich pasturage it affords—and the abundanceof durable timber, vanilla, ixtle, &c, growing on it, all served toinvest it with a degree of interest. The number of cattle, con-sidering the immense extent of grazing-land, is, however, com-paratively small, and 6000 head may be stated as the utmostrange.
