Against thisbackground one sees the heavily laden peasant. It ishis lot to be oppressed. In order to breathe a littlemore freely, he at times oppresses others. Such is theRussian village. People move about in the hut.s, nearthe huts, and work in the fields. On their sodden, yel-lowish-dark faces there is the stamp of deep, dumbsorrow, and of resignation. No illuminating intelli-gence shines in their actions. The herd-like lifedestroys in them everything living,—it destroys ability,and subjects the individual to the instincts of the blindmasses. Accidents and habits hold sway, and blindinstincts triumph ; but there are no guiding principlesto direct the work. There Is no knowledge creative ofenterprise. Thesame applies also to the towns, where the condi-tion of factory labor is scarcely better than thatof the peasants. We find sanitary defects inour fatherland wherever we turn, says anotherwriter in the same journal. The sanitary condi-tions under which the factory employees live arefrequently in an awful state, and their evils aremultiplied by overcrowding. As to village life, it is like an aw^ful nightmare.The population is dying out in many places. Let us,for instance, consider the question of drinking-water,the contamination of which is widespread. The Volgaand its tributaries are covered with naphtha to such anextent that in some places the water is totally unfit foruse.
