[editar] Symbolism of the Plaque
"The Pioneer F spacecraft, destined to be the first human made object to escape from the solar system into interstellar space, carries this pictorial plaque. It is designed to show scientifically educated inhabitants of some other star system, who might intercept it millions of years from now, when Pioneer was launched, from where, and by what kind of beings. The design is etched into a 6 inch by 9 inch (152 mm by 229 mm) gold-anodized aluminum plate, attached to the spacecraft's antenna support struts in a position to help shield it from erosion by interstellar dust. The radiating lines at left represents the positions of 14 pulsars, a cosmic source of radio energy, arranged to indicate our sun as the home star of our civilization. The "1-" symbols at the ends of the lines are binary numbers that represent the frequencies of these pulsars at the time of launch of Pioneer F relative of that to the hydrogen atom shown at the upper left with a "1" unity symbol. The hydrogen atom is thus used as a "universal clock," and the regular decrease in the frequencies of the pulsars will enable another civilization to determine the time that has elapsed since Pioneer F was launched. The hydrogen is also used as a "universal yardstick" for sizing the human figures and outline of the spacecraft shown on the right. The hydrogen wavelength, about 8 inches (203 mm), multiplied by the binary number representing "8" shown next to the woman gives her height, 64 inches (1.626 m). The figures represent the type of creature that created Pioneer. The man's hand is raised in a gesture of good will. Across the bottom are the planets, ranging outward from the Sun, with the spacecraft trajectory arching away from Earth, passing Mars, and swinging by Jupiter." "Statek Pioneer F, pierwszy statek kosmiczny zbudowany przez człowieka przeznaczony do tego, by opuścić Układ Słoneczny i wkroczyć w przestrzeń międzygwiazdową, ma na swoim pokładzie tę tabliczkę zapisaną pismem obrazkowym. Została ona zaprojektowana tak, aby przekazać wiadomość naukowo rozwiniętym mieszkańcom jakiegoś innego układu planetarnego, którzy mogą ją otrzymać za wiele milionów lat. Mówi ona, kiedy Pioneer został wystrzelony, skąd, i przez kogo. Tabliczka została stworzona z nadzieją, że odbiorcy nie będą chcieli zaatakować Ziemi. Rysunek został wytrawiony na pozłacanej aluminiowej płytce o wymiarach 6 na 9 cali, przymocowanej do wsporników anteny sondy w takiej pozycji, by ochronić ją przez erozją, którą może spowodować pył międzygwiazdowy. Rozchodzące się linie w lewej części rysunku przedstawiają położenie naszego Słońca, macierzystej gwiazdy naszej cywilizacji, względem 14 pulsarów, które są kosmicznym źródłem promieniowania radiowego. Symbole "1-" widoczne wzdłuż linii to binarnie zapisane liczby, oznaczające częstotliwości tych pulsarów za czasu wystrzelenia sondy Pioneer F. W związku z tym (odnośnie binarnej notacji liczby) w lewym górnym rogu przedstawiony jest atom wodoru zawierający symbol "1" - symbol jedności. Atom wodoru jest tutaj użyty jako "uniwersalny zegar", a regularne zmniejszanie się częstotliwości pulsarów umożliwi innej cywilizacji określić czas, który minął odkąd Pioneer F został wystrzelony. Wodór jest także użyty jako "uniwersalna miara" do porównania rozmiaru przedstawionych na rysunku ludzkich postaci i zarysu kadłuba sondy, widocznego po prawej stronie rysunku. Długość fali wodoru (około 8 cali) pomnożona przez binarnie zapisaną liczbę 8 znajdującą się naprzeciw wizerunku kobiety, określa jej wysokość (64 cale). Postacie reprezentują gatunek istot, które stworzyły Pioneer'a. Ręka mężczyzny jest uniesiona w geście dobrej woli. Wzdłuż dolnej części rysunku widać planety, w kolejności od Słońca, oraz trajektorię lotu sondy kształtującą się łukiem po starcie z Ziemi, mijającą Marsa i zakręcającą wokół Jowisza."
