In the north of New Ireland several types of masks can be distinguished. They are carved from soft wood, particularly Alstonia villosa and Alstonia scholaris, similar to that of the European lime tree. Originally stone axes were used, as well as tools presumably made out of shells and/or sharks’ teeth. The mask were sanded down with pieces of rough thornback or shark skin. From 1850 onwards, traditional tools were replaced with European imported iron tools. A certain type of New Ireland mask is called dudul and represents an owl, distinguishable in the big eyes and beak, sculpted in relief. The dried rush pith covering the mask represents the bird’s feathers. Whether the owl is considered a totem animal can not be learned from literature. The mask is used during initiation rites where the dancers wearing the masks and partially covered in leafs, form two lines. Part of the dances consist of slow movements, accompanied by monotone singing, in an attempt to imitate the heavy wingbeat of the owl. A similar owl mask can be found in the Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin. It was collected by Scharf and Kayser in the northwest of New Ireland, where these masks were usually found, in 1904. Helfrich classified it as a type 12 A.e. in his own mask classification. Similarities between the Ghent and the Berlin mask lead one to believe that both masks originate from the same workshop, maybe even the same sculptor.Nederlands: H. 49 cm, L. 29cm, B. 19,5 cm Hout, rotan, katoenweefsel, biesmerg, vezels, turbo-slakdeksel, parinarium-pasta. |
