La controversia del palo de hockey arrancó en 2003 por Stephen McIntyre y Ross McKitrick[1] como una disputa por las estimaciones reconstruídas de Tº medias del Hemisferio Norte en el último milenio,[2] especialmente en la particular reconstrucción de Michael E. Mann, Raymond S. Bradley y de Malcolm K. Hughes,[3] frecuentemente referenciados como reconstrucción MBH98. El término palo de hockey fue acuñado por el director del Laboratorio Geofísico de Dinámica de Fluidos, NOAA Jerry Mahlman, al describir su patrón.
Naturaleza de la disputa
Existen registros instrumentales cuasiglobales de Tº desde aproximadamente 1850. Sin embargo, para construir un registro a escala milenaria, se requieren proxies para la Tº. En consecuencia, hay cuestiones relativas a la precisión con que estos proxies reflejar el cambio de temperatura real, su cobertura geográfica, y los métodos estadísticos empleados para combinarlos.
