Se cree que las relaciones Indo-Mesopotamia se desarrollaron durante la segunda mitad del tercer milenio a.C., hasta que se interrumpieron con la extinción de la civilización del valle del Indo después de alrededor de 1900 a.C.[6][7][8] Mesopotamia ya había sido un intermediario en el comercio de lapislázuli entre el sur de Asia y Egipto desde al menos alrededor de 3200 a.C., en el contexto de las relaciones Egipto-Mesopotamia.[9][10]
