They Might Be Giants es el primer disco de They Might Be Giants, También conocido como el "Album Rosado".

Se hicieron videos musicales para las canciones "Don't Let's Start", "Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head" y "(She Was A) Hotel Detective".

Linnell responded that they "were in this band, we're making this record, and we're going to start touring next year...They were particularly interested in that, because they said that 1992 was International Space Year. It was the first time we ever heard of that, but they said because we were a band going to be touring around the world in 1992 they wondered if we wanted to be spokesband for the International Space Year. John Henry is the name of They Might Be Giants' fifth original album, although it is the sixth disc in their discography. It was released in 1994 (see 1994 in music). It is the first album in which John Linnell and John Flansburgh utilized a full band, as opposed to playing most or all of the instruments themselves. The album's name, a reference to the man vs. machine fable of John Henry, is roughly an allusion to the band's fundamental switch to more conventional instrumentation, especially the newly-established use of a human drummer instead of a drum machine.

John Henry is both TMBG's longest record (twenty tracks clocking in at about a full hour) and their most divisive. However, it remains the band's highest-charting adult album, having peaked at #61 on the Billboard 200.

Lyrical themes[editar]

The lyrics to the song "AKA Driver" refer to a "NyQuil driver". Legal issues — whether real or perceived — required a title with no reference to the medicine, and the lyrics to the song are omitted from the CD insert.

"I Should Be Allowed to Think" excerpts the first line (I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving, hysterical) of the poem Howl by Allen Ginsberg.

"Meet James Ensor" refers to an eccentric Belgian expressionist painter whose works excited John Flansburgh. In an interview, Flansburgh explained that "the line 'Dig him up and shake his hand' is actually very specific – a parallel idea to a lot of his paintings which involve resurrections, skeletons and puppets being animated. [...] With the song, I'm trying to encapsulate the issues of his life – an eccentric guy who became celebrated and was soon left behind as his ideas were taken into the culture and other people became expressionists."[1]

The song "Subliminal" contains a subliminal message at the end of the song saying "Stare into the subliminal for as long as you can" twice.

Factory Showroom is the sixth studio album by the band They Might Be Giants. It was released in 1996 (see 1996 in music) through Elektra Records.

The album reclaims the more diverse and electronic sound of their early work, moving away from the live, relentlessly driving rock feel of its 1994 predecessor, John Henry. Still, Factory Showroom differed from previous They Might Be Giants recordings in several ways. While the band introduced a bassist and a drummer for John Henry, Factory Showroom was their first album to feature a second guitarist. Eric Schermerhorn played lead guitar on the album, adding solos to tracks like "XTC vs. Adam Ant", but evidently the band felt that this brand of guitar work did not mesh with their style, as Schermerhorn left the band after a short amount of touring. Factory Showroom also had, by far, the fewest number of tracks of any They Might Be Giants album up until the release of The Else, coming in at only thirteen, while no previous TMBG album had any fewer than eighteen tracks. The tracks on Factory Showroom tend to be longer than their older songs, however, so the album as a whole takes about as much time as their previous efforts.

John Flansburgh (founding member, guitarist and songwriter) has publicly declared Factory Showroom to be his favorite of the duo's many recordings [2]. Feeling that Elektra Records did not do enough to promote the album, among other disputes, They Might Be Giants left the label after its release.

Trivia[editar]

  • "I Can Hear You" was recorded at the Edison Laboratory on a wax cylinder phonograph without the use of electricity.
  • "New York City" is a cover of a song by the band cub.
  • "James K. Polk" is a song about James Knox Polk, the 11th President of the United States. A sparser, drum machine driven version had previously popped up on the Istanbul (Not Constantinople) EP (1990).
  • The hidden track (Track 0) on the CD entitled "Token Back to Brooklyn" is accessible by rewinding from the beginning of Track 1 ("S-E-X-X-Y"), and is not playable on all CD players. It can, however, also be heard on the rarities compilation They Got Lost along with the Internet-only album Long Tall Weekend.
  • Much to the disdain of the Johns, a cassette version of the album that claimed to be a "promotional item" from Elektra was leaked by an unknown source. Along with every song from the standard release (including "Token Back To Brooklyn"), this version also included versions of "On The Drag" and "Older" that have not reappeared on an official release, as well as "SenSurround" (the single version), "Counterfeit Faker", "Certain People I Could Name", "Unforgotten", "Reprehensible", "They Got Lost", and "Rat Patrol". All of these tracks were rejects from the Factory Showroom sessions, and were either released on the S-E-X-X-Y EP or the 1999 album Long Tall Weekend.

Long Tall Weekend is a downloadable album released by They Might Be Giants in 1999. It was released exclusively on-line through eMusic (see 1999 in music). It was the first major full-length album released exclusively on the Internet by an established major label band. [1] Many of these songs were outtakes from the Factory Showroom sessions. There were some copies of an actual Long Tall Weekend CD released at certain concerts, as well as some released to certain stores for promotional use.

Song notes[editar]

  • "Older" was re-recorded for They Might Be Giant's next album, Mink Car (2001)
  • "Edison Museum" was re-released on No! (2002)
  • "Rat Patrol", "Token Back to Brooklyn", "Reprehensible", "Certain People I Could Name" and "They Got Lost" later appeared on the rarities compilation album They Got Lost (2002)
  • "Token Back To Brooklyn" also previously appeared as a hidden track on the CD version of Factory Showroom (1996)
  • A live version of "They Got Lost" had been previously released on Severe Tire Damage (1998)
  • "On Earth My Nina" is a backwards version of the song "Thunderbird", which wouldn't get an official release until The Spine (2004). However, it isn't the actual song reversed; it is John Linnell singing what he heard when he reversed the song.

Mink Car es el octavo Album de estudio de They Might Be Giants, released in 2001 (see 2001 in music) on Restless Records.

One of the band's most eclectic efforts, its variety reflects its recording process: it was put together in a number of different studios, with a number of different producers, around the country as the band toured between 1999 and 2001.

It runs the gamut from pure power-pop ("Bangs", "Finished With Lies") to dance music ("Man, It's So Loud In Here"), and even soft romantic ballads ("Another First Kiss"). Its cover of the Georgie Fame oldie "Yeh Yeh" was featured in a Chrysler commercial.

No! is the ninth studio album by the alternative rock band They Might Be Giants, released in 2002 on Rounder Records. It is their first album of children's music.

Retaining the eclecticism, humor and psychedelic sensibilities of their adult work, the lyrical stylings are decidedly different: the darker themes of death and depression have been replaced with songs extolling the virtues of imagination, taste buds and sleep. However, it is described on the back of the CD as TMBG's first album "for the entire family," and many songs appeal to older audiences unlike those by most mainstream children's music artists such as Raffi. The album contains a cover of Vic Mizzy's safety song "In the Middle, In the Middle, In the Middle" sung by Robin Goldwasser.

No! was released as an enhanced CD; while it plays normally in any CD audio player, it features a CD-ROM portion as well, providing the listener with flash animations and interactive games on a personal computer.

Here Come the ABCs is a 2005 DVD and audio CD release by They Might Be Giants, aimed at young children learning the alphabet. The CD and DVD were originally released separately, but since have been released together as a combo.

While it was produced and released by Walt Disney Records, the band was reportedly given complete creative control over the project. As a result, the DVD features a variety of puppetry, animation and live action supplied by personal friends of the group, including AJ Schnack, who directed the TMBG documentary Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns). For guest vocals on a few tracks, they turned to family: John Flansburgh's wife Robin Goldwasser, and John Linnell's son, Henry. The music videos that appear on the DVD were also aired (in part or whole) on the Disney Channel's children's programming block, Playhouse Disney.

Here Come the ABCs was a great success for They Might Be Giants, being certified Gold (sales over 500,000) in 2005, and is the second-highest selling They Might Be Giants album of all time, behind Flood. The album reached #1 on Billboard’s Children’s Music charts, won Parenting Magazine’s Children’s DVD of the Year Award and two National Parenting Publications Awards (NAAPA) [2]. In addition, Amazon.com called it "the best Children's Music album of 2005" and the 13th best overall album of 2005. [3] A follow-up, Here Come the 123s, was released in 2008.

"Can You Find It?" was featured on the soundtrack to the movie Wordplay.

While the audio-only release is considered to be They Might Be Giants eleventh studio album, some of the songs make little sense without their visual accompaniment.

Here Comes Science is a children's DVD/CD set from They Might Be Giants, and is the third in their line of educational albums, following 2005's Here Come The ABCs and 2008's Here Come The 123s. It is the band's fourteenth studio album and fourth children's album.

The band began hinting that the next children's album would be science-themed via interviews around the release of 123s, but the actual title of the album was not confirmed until an August 2008 interview with John Flansburgh for Blogcritics Magazine. After the album had been completed, TMBG remarked in the June 19 newsletter that some of the scientific subjects definitely included on the album would be "the periodic table, photosynthesis, the color spectrum, the scientific method, [and] paleontology."

The album had been in production since at least late 2007, as a short sample clip for a music video from the album—"Planets"—was posted in January 2008 to Colourmovie's website. The band also hired a scientific consultant for this project because, as Flansburgh admitted, "frankly, I was a terrible science student in high school. My last memory of the periodic table was right before I lost consciousness." [1]
