Proxyware
Proxyware, colloquially termed internet-sharing applications,[1] are desktop and mobile applications that allow their users to monetize their unused Internet bandwidth[2] by selling it to the application provider to resell.[3]
A device that runs proxyware is turned into a type of proxy server, and the user typically earns about $1 for every 10GB of their bandwidth shared.[4] To prevent abuse, some applications limit the number of active devices per account.[5]
Proxyware is used for several business needs,[6] such as improving network performance[7] or as a way for marketing companies to access resources from residential networks in various geographic regions to test campaigns and bypass network restrictions.[8] Proxyware can also share bandwidth with antivirus, firewalls, and similar programs.[9]
