John Zorn (2 de septiembre de 1953, Queens, Nueva York) compositor y saxofonista estadounidense de origen judío.

Músico de gran creatividad que ha asimilado multitud de influencias y siempre ha sentido predilección por la escena underground y las propuestas extremas y arriesgadas. Es a su vez dueño de un sello discográfico (Tzadik) inaugurado en 1995 a través del cual edita sus discos, los cuales son ya más de cien.

Ha trabajado en múltiples proyectos cada cual más arriesgado. Masada es uno de ellos, un grupo de jazz con influencias muy variadas, abierto a la improvisación. Han editado más de diez discos de estudio y sus respectivos directos. También ha trabajado en el mundo de las bandas sonoras; lleva editados 23 discos de sus filmworks en los cuales recolecta estos temas. Por último, ha grabado discos en solitario y múltiples experimentos musicales para dibujos animados, programaciones imposibles, sonidos abstractos, piezas de cámara, conciertos para piano y un sinfín de ideas desarrolladas junto a diversos músicos.

Biografía

Zorn nació en Nueva York en 1953, aprendió a tocar otros instrumentos antes de comenzar a tocar el saxofón y aprender composición en 1970.

Tiene un método compositivo por el cual se crean diversas imágenes y momentos musicales que luego son estructurados y ordenados. Es uno de los máximos exponentes del noise-music, un estilo collage que fusiona el free, sonidos electrónicos, efectos, voces deformadas, etc. Zorn se introdujo en el jazz llevado por su pasión hacia la música contemporánea y tras escuchar a gente como John Cage y Stockhausen, entre otros. En su música descubrimos también influencias de Ennio Morricone y otros compositores de bandas sonoras, reminiscencias de la cultura judía e inspiración en los músicos-compositores Harry Partch, Charles Ives, etc.
