On November 19th, the battle-field at Gettysburg, which had been set apartas a national cemetery, was consecrated to its pious purpose by impressive cer-emonies. The president and his Cabinet, governors and officials of severalstates, and large masses of people assembled on this occasion. Edward Everett,late secretary of state, and senator from Massachusetts, one of the greatestpublic speakers of the day, with an international reputation, was the orator ofthe occasion. President Lincoln, however, while in the cars on his way fromthe White House, was notified that he would be expected to make some remarksalso. From a literarypoint of view, this speech has come to be regarded as an American classic. Mr.Everett was a good and great man; his memory will be affectionately cherished;but his splendid sentences have already been forgotten, while Lincolns fewimpressive words have already an imperishable place in the history and literatureof the world. Here is the address: Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this con-tinent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition thatall men are created equal.
