Delahaye fue una empresa francesa dedicada a la fabricación de coches de diseño propio.

Mechanical Engineer Emile Delahaye started his company on 1879 in Tours, France and soon began making four stroke internal combustion engines. By 1894 he had built his first car when he was 51 years old. After his death in 1905, the company had the good fortune to be run by Charles Wiffenbach, Georges Leon Desmarais, Pierre Peigney, Amedee Varlet and Jean Francois. Delahaye continued operations and in 1933 acquired the assets of the Delage Company, another French manufacturer who had earned a reputation for building elegant automobiles. Delahaye continued to manufacture cars until they closed their doors in 1954. Admirably, they survived the Depression, which was devastating in Europe. During that 75 year period, Delahaye and Delage produced, without question, some of the most opulent and downright sensual custom automobiles in history. In the 1930's, Paris, France was the fashion capitol of the world. A number of French carrossiers (custom coachbuilders) including Antem, Henri Chapron, Carrosserie de Villars, Dubos, Faget Varnet, Fernandez & Darrin, Figoni & Falaschi, Marius Franay, A. Guillore, Labourdette, Letourneur & Marchand, Marcel Pourtout and Jacques Saoutchik cloaked Delage and Delahaye chassis, as well as other manufacturer's products, with individually designed and crafted bodies during this golden era. For a complete array of what must rank as some of the most beautiful cars in the world, see Richard Adatto and Diana Meredith's books, DELAHAYE STYLING AND DESIGN, and DELAGE STYLING AND DESIGN. We've just focused on what we feel are the most delicious designs. DELAHAYE USA is our tribute to Emile Delahaye and the work of this collection of fine craftsmen.

With such a venerated history, it would be totally presumptuous of me to present my company as being a manufacturer of Delahaye automobiles. DELAHAYE USA is in no way connected with the original Delahaye GFA (Générale Française Automobile) company that went out of business in 1954. Likewise we are in no way connected or endorsed by the Delahaye Club in France, founded in 1966, by a group of enthusiasts who have registered about 1,800 cars built between 1894 and 1954. I'm so passionate about some of these coachbuilt cars, I've dedicated my life to recreating a precious few high quality replicas with modern chassis and engines. DELAHAYE USA offers enthusiasts a reasonably priced alternative with spectacular, sensual looking streamliners for the street.

If you think I'm not passionate about pontoon fendered cars, here's a shot of my DECO RIDES Boattail I drove to work, parked in front of my office April 21, 2007, the day I started writing and designing this DELAHAYE USA website.

In the past fifteen years I've attended numerous Concours d'Elegance, visited the world's top car museums, read books and searched the internet for what I feel are the most beautiful cars in history. I feel these cars were built mostly in Europe, during what I consider the golden age of car design, the mid to late 1930's. In particular I love "pontoon fendered" cars. As you might expect the most beautiful cars in the world are also some of the most expensive. They've been gobbled up by billionaires and many are secreted away in private collections, never to be seen by the public. The goal of DELAHAYE USA is to recreate a few of these incredibly beautiful cars with modern engine, suspensions and accoutrements so the ownrs can drive them and enjoy them on the highway.

The steel DECO RIDES "Scrape" 1939 Zephyr (above left) from Terry Cook's "Street Rod Period" in the 1990's. Terry evolved away from street rods toward creations like this Maserati powered DECO RIDES Boattail that sold at Pebble Beach in 2005 (above right).

To me styling is EVERYTHING! In the 1990's I created the scrape Zephyr (built in four years by Ram's Rod Shop in Dover, DE). I started DECO RIDES, a division of my corporation Appleton Productions Inc. (named after the accessory spotlights) which produces LEAD EAST, World's Biggest 50's Party. DECO RIDES offers fiberglass "kit car" bodies of the Zephyr and a cut down, Figoni-inspired boattail speedsters. DELAHAYE USA will have nothing to do with fiberglass bodied cars or "kit cars".
It should be clear that we are copying other people's work, not claiming these designs as our own. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and we are honoring the great automotive artists. My four favorite designers are Guiseppi Figoni (Italian), Jacques Saoutchik (Russian), Jean Bugatti (Italian) and Georges Paulin (French) of Portout. Cars we produce are not intended to be exact copies, as we may "cheat" and stretch the wheelbase to offer more legroom to rumble seat passengers, etc. We will not be limited to French-built marques such as Delahayes and Delages. Talbot Lago, Duesenberg, Bugatti and Rolls Royce had some incredible landmark designs crafted by coachbuilders that we'd love to recreate.
