Supergrupo es un término utilizado para describir a grupos de música formados por artistas que habían tenido fama y respeto en grupos anteriores o a nivel individual. Este comenzó a usarse a finales de los años 60, tomando su nombre del disco Super Session (1968), de Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield y Stephen Stills. El supergrupo formado por Crosby, Stills & Nash (después Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, cuando se les unió Neil Young) es otro ejemplo de los 60, debido al éxito que habían alcanzado en sus anteriores grupos (The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield y The Hollies).

El término es en ocasiones utilizado por determinados periodistas musicales para referirse a grupos que han vendido una gran cantidad de discos y que han sido cabezas de cartel en grandes conciertos o festivales de música, independientemente de la fama de sus miembros individuales, como es el caso de Cream (de quienes sólo Eric Clapton era famoso). No obstante, el término, correctamente utilizado, se refiere a la "arquitectura" de la banda, no al éxito que pueda llegar a alcanzar. "Supergrupo", generalmente, tampoco engloba a bandas existentes cuyos miembros adquirieron fama individual después de que se fundase la misma, como ha ocurrido con Genesis, Yes , Broken Social Scene y (claro) The Beatles, que retrospectivamente pueden llegar a considerarse supergrupos. Tampoco se utiliza el término para designar a las bandas que, manteniendo su nombre original, ha reclutado a uno o varios músicos famosos, como Van Halen después de unirse Sammy Hagar y Gary Cherone o The Eagles, después de la entrada de Joe Walsh y Timothy B. Schmit. De todas maneras, el término "supergrupo" no está rígidamente definido y es utilizado como una estrategia de mercado.

Los supergrupos (en su definición estricta) tienden a tener una corta vida, que a menudo no va más allá de uno o dos álbumes publicados. Además, suelen formarse como un proyecto paralelo más que con la idea de permanecer en el tiempo como banda.
