[editar] Inicios
John Rhys-Davies antes de ser actor se formó como un ingeniero mecánico. Sin embargo, leyendo abundante literatura clásica, lo llevó en un primer momento a pensar en convertirse en un escritor, pero la posibilidad de actuar y escribir guiones lo llevaron a convertirse en actor.
Estudió en la Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts y en la Universidad de East Anglia en Norwich donde se graduó como actor en el estilo del teatro shakespeariano, estilo que lo llevó a interpretar personajes de corte épico con un sello muy personal. Ha interpretado exitósamente a personajes como Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Henry IV, Hedda Gabler y El Misántropo de Molière.

Entre sus papeles más conocidos figura su aparición en la serie de TV, Shogun (Serie de TV 1980) como el piloto Rodrigues donde se hizo más conocido; actuó en la saga de Indiana Jones como Sallah, el amigo del protagonista; también como el profesor Challenger en las películas de Lost World y Return to the lost world, la serie de "sliders" con su personaje del profesor Maximilian Arturo, y el personaje de Gimli en el film El Señor de los Anillos.

John Rhys-Davies es un apasionado coleccionista de automóviles. Vive en la Isla de Man, en Escocia y su vida transcurre entre Los Ángeles (EE.UU.) y esta isla.
