Dorotheanthus fue descrita por el arqueólogo, historiador y botánico alemán; Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes, y publicado en Möller's Deutsche Gärtn.-Zeitung 42: 283 (1927). La especie tipo es : Dorotheanthus gramineus (Haw.) Schwantes (Mesembryanthemum gramineum Haw.)
